Originally from the Southwest of France, Mathieu Sodore was born on June 13, 1962. He studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Bordeaux (École des Beaux-Arts and Université de Bordeaux III), earning a Master’s degree in 1984 and the CAPES in visual arts in 1985. In July 2001, he moved to Lisbon, Portugal.
Mathieu Sodore began exhibiting in the 1980s. Since then, his work has been shown repeatedly in France and abroad. Notably, he participated in the traveling exhibition Internation’art at the Galerie de Nesle in Paris and at the Cercle San Lluc in Barcelona, Spain, in 1990; at the Salon de Montrouge in 1993 and 1996; and at the Salon Grands et Jeunes d’Aujourd’hui in Paris in 1997, 1998, and 1999. In 1999, he was part of the French selection of this Salon and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Dubrovnik, Croatia. In 2006, he participated in Arte Lisboa, the Lisbon International Contemporary Art Fair, on the Monumental gallery stand.
In 2010, he was included in the traveling exhibition Toreador, presented that year in Nîmes, then in 2011 in Arles and Madrid, and in 2012 in Ciudad Rodrigo and Seville, Spain. In 2013, he took part in an artist residency and group exhibition in Morocco at the Al Maqam Space (Tahanaout). In 2016, he exhibited at the Atalante Gallery in Madrid.
Among his solo exhibitions since 2000 are: Le Poète Debout at the Maison-Musée Fernando Pessoa, Lisbon (2002); Inpetto at the Chapelle des Carmes / Musée de Borda, Dax (2004); Figuras at the Chapelle des Jésuites, Nîmes (2005); Conhecer/Reconhecer at the Monumental Gallery, Lisbon (2007); La Música Callada del Cantaor as part of the “Arte Flamenco” festival in Mont-de-Marsan (2009) and at the French Institute in Lisbon (2010); a Goya homage installation in the arenas of Garlin (2011); exhibition at Matadero Contemporary Art Center, Madrid (2013); invitation to Japan by the Tiempo Iberoamericano Foundation and exhibition at the Taller Gallery, Fukuoka (2014); La Soledad Sonora at the Joaquín Roncal Cultural Center, Zaragoza, and the Pilar Miró Cultural Center, Madrid (2015); the series On nous presse at Passevite, Lisbon (2015); and Vidas Queimadas at Passevite, Lisbon (2016).
In 2009, filmmaker Floreal Peleato produced a feature-length documentary, La Mano Azul (The Blue Hand), devoted to Mathieu Sodore’s painting. The film has been screened in France, Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Colombia, Germany, Chile, Bolivia, Morocco, Uruguay, Brazil, and Japan.
In 2011, a chapter on this film was included in the book Biographies de Peintres à l’Écran, edited by Patricia-Laure Thivat and published by Presses Universitaires de Rennes.
In 2015, he established the Passevite workshop/gallery in Lisbon, a space for alternative artistic production and reception. Focused on contemporary creation and cultural dissemination, Passevite offers programming open to a wide range of artistic languages and genres.
Other activities related to art alternate with his painting: writing and illustrating books, teaching, designing posters, giving lectures, contributing to journals and magazines, and participating in the production of films, music performances, and theater productions.
